Guns 'n' Roses - November Rain

November Rain is one of the most popular power ballads written by USA hard rock band, Guns 'n' Roses. It appears on the third album of the band, Use your Illusion I.

As it is said, Axl Rose worked in the song since 1983 until it released in 1991.

"When we were doing that EP for L.A. Guns, like '83? He was playing 'November Rain' — and it was called 'November Rain' — you know, on piano. The guitar solo is amazing. Way back then. It was the only thing he knew how to play, but it was his. He'd go, "Someday this song is gonna be really cool." And I'd go, "It's cool now." "But it's not done", you know, he used to say. And, like, anytime we'd be at a hotel or anywhere, there'd be a piano; he'd just kinda play that music. And I'd go, "When are you gonna finish that already", you know? And he'd go, "I don't know what to do with it."

About the video:

The video is based in Del James short story, 'Without you', (forming an unofficial thrilogy with 'Estranged' and 'Don't cry') although it has never been confirmed.

The story is about a rock star grieving over the death of his on-and-off-again girlfriend, who killed herself tormented by their turbulent relationship (inspired by Axl Rose's relationship with Erin Everly - luckily it ended in a non-tragical way). It describes a blues-influenced miserable rock star called Mayne, always dissatisfied because although his fortune he can't find such as simple things as love or happyness. He call his ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth, but when he doesn't received the call back he realizes something's wrong so he goes to her appartment, where after pulling down the door he find his girl laying on the floor with a headshot, while one of his songs is played. In that moment, Mayne tried to killed himself with the gun, but he can't because it was just one bullet. Mayne gets depressed, he never can get over Elizabeth death, and in the heat of his anger he begins to destroy every object in his appartment, including his valuable guitars. Amid desperation, he sees his piano and decides to play it. A great flame ignites creating a great fire that burns everything, but he never stops playing...

'November Rain' lyrics don't talk about suicide, just about a temperamental relationship. Due to one of the interpretations, lyrics are from a man to his girlfriend, of how trouble times (cold November rain) won't last forever, and he is willing to leave her alone if it is necessary for her to come back with him. 

The video, on the other hand, follow the story more faithfully, from love and live, through dead and funeral. It shows us a happy Axl Rose marrying his girlfriend (played by his real girlfriend in that moment, Stephanie Seymour), interconected with a live concert in 'Carnegie Hall' (New York), the banquet after the wedding, and the funeral. Slash (guitar) stars one of the most memorable scenes, including an epic sequence with a sweep from an helicopter while he's playing in front of a church in the middle of nothing and a posterior scene where he plays up the piano in Carnegie Hall. Although the video doesn't explain how the girlfriend dies, in the minute 7:21 of the video we can notice a mirror covering over half her face, a technique used by funeral homes to allow victims of head trauma to have the appearance of a full face. It suggests that she kills herself with headshot as in the story.

Another less popular theory makes a reference to a previous moment where Axl Rose walks alone at night ahead of a guns shop at minute 5:36 of the video. Some people see this scene as an indication that the shooter is Axl Rose. This ambiguity of suicide/homicide corresponds to the guilt of the protagonist of Del James story for inciting to the suicide.

Also, another theory refers that the girlfriend was murderer during wedding while 'November Rain' storm, ending the banquet. After a thunderbolt, we can see bride's veil falling to the ground, so it can suggest that she was killed by a ray.

For me, the best part of this song, omitting Slash who's for me the best thing of Guns 'n' Roses, happened in November 1992 during a concert in Bogotá (Colombia) where it started to rain while the band was playing November Rain (video at the end of the post). Sometimes coincidences lead us to marvelous moments.

El video está basado en una historia del escrito americano Del James, 'Without you' (formando una trilogía no oficial junto con 'Estranged' y 'Don't cry') a pesar de que esta información nunca ha sido confirmada ni por Del James ni por ningún miembro de la banda.

La historia trata sobre el duelo de una rock star por la muerte de su novia, la cual se suicida atormentada por su relación turbia (inspirado en la relación de Axl Rose con su ex-esposa, Erin Everly). El cuento describe la miserable vida de una estrella de rock influenciada por el Blues, que aparentemente tiene todo, pero es incapaz de conseguir cosas tan simples como el amor y la felicidad. Llama a su antigua novia, Elizabeth, y al no recibir respuesta se da cuenta de que algo no va bien, así que decide ir a su apartamento y al no abrirle nadie la puerta, echa la puerta abajo y se encuentra a su ex-novia muerta en el suelo con un tiro en la cabeza, tras suicidarse mientras escuchaba una de las canciones que él había compuesto para ella. En ese momento, Mayne intenta suicidarse, pero la pistola sólo tenía una bala. Mayne entra en una espiral de depresión ya que es incapaz de superar la muerte de Elizabeth, y en un momento de ira comienza a destruir todos los objetos de su apartamento, incluídas sus guitarras. En mitad de su ataque de ira ve el piano y comienza a tocar. Una llama se enciende provocando un incendio que lo consume todo, pero él nunca deja de tocar...

Las letras de 'November Rain' no hablan sobre el suicidio, sí sobre una relación tempestuosa. Una de las muchas interpretaciones sugiere que la canción está dirigida de un hombre a su novia, sobre cómo los problemas (la 'fría lluvia de Noviembre') no durará para siempre, y que está dispuesto a dejarla sola si es lo que necesita para volver con él.

El video, por otra parte, se ciñe más fielmente a la historia, desde el amor y la vida, hasta la muerte y el funeral. Nos muestra a un Axl Rose feliz casándose con su novia (papel interpretado por su novia real en aquel momento, Stephanie Seymour), interconectado con un concierto en el 'Carnegie Hall' (Nueva York), el banquete tras la boda y el funeral. Slash (guitarrista) protagoniza algunas de las escenas más memorables que podemos ver en el video, incluyendo una secuencia con un barrido de helicóptero mientras toca la guitarra delante de una iglesia en mitad de la nada, y una escena posterior en la que podemos verle tocando encima del piano en Carnegie Hall. A pesar de que el video no explica como muere la chica, en el minuto 7:21 podemos observar una marca que sería un espejo, una técnica usada por las funerarias en las víctimas de un trauma craneoencefálico para poder tener un funeral a tapa abierta mostrando la parte de la cara que se encuentra intacta reflejada en el espejo. Esto sugiere que la novia se suicidó con un tiro en la cabeza tal y como sucede en la historia.

Otra teoría menos popular hace referencia a un momento previo en el video, en el minuto 5:36, donde Axl Rose camina solo de noche por delante de una tienda de armas. Los defensores de esta teoría creen que esta escena representaría que el asesino es Axl Rose. Esta ambigüedad suicidio/homicidio se debe a la culpa que siente el protagonista del cuento de Del James por incitar al suicidio a su ex-novia a base de provocarla dolor.

Otra de las teorías defiende que la novia fue asesinada durante la boda en la tormenta, al final del banquete. Después de un rayo, podemos ver el velo de la novia cayendo al suelo, lo cual puede sugerir que murió a causa de un rayo que la alcanzó.

Para mí, una de las mejores cosas de esta canción, omitiendo a Slash que para mi es lo mejor de Guns 'n' Roses, ocurrió en Noviembre de 1992 durante un concierto en Bogotá (Colombia) cuando empezó a llover mientras tocaban November Rain. A veces, las coincidencias nos dan momentos maravillosos.
